Founded by Mardavij ibn Ziyar, who claimed descent from the pre-Islamic royal house of Gilan, ruling the Caspian provinces of Gorgan, Mazandaran and Tabaristan.
Reduced by Ghaznavid sack of Amol in 1035 and long vassalage to the Seljuks; ended in 1090 when the Nizari Ismaili state under Hasan-i Sabbah overthrew the last Ziyarid ruler Gilanshah in Tabaristan.
