Southernmost Hausa city-state, associated with the warrior queen Amina.
The Kingdom of Zazzau (Zaria) was conquered by the Fulani jihad of Usman dan Fodio during 1804–1808, being formally captured in December 1808, and reconstituted as the Emirate of Zaria within the Sokoto Caliphate; it was subsequently taken by the British in 1903 when Lugard's forces absorbed it into the Northern Nigeria Protectorate, and the emirate continues as a traditional institution within Kaduna State, Nigeria.
