The Zayyanid Kingdom of Tlemcen was conquered by the Ottoman Empire in 1551–1554; the last sultan Hasan al-Abdallah fled to Oran under Spanish protection, was baptized and took the name Carlos, and died there of plague in 1560, with Tlemcen incorporated into the Ottoman Regency of Algiers.
