Yapese Empire

950 – 1899
ChiefdomOceania

A maritime tribute network radiating from Yap across over 1,300 km of the Caroline Islands, maintained through the ritual exchange of rai (stone money) and the sawei ceremonial system — unusual among Micronesian polities for its informal but far-reaching socioeconomic influence.

The Yapese maritime sphere and its sawei tribute network were disrupted under German colonial administration after Germany acquired the Carolines from Spain on 3 November 1899; the German administration actively suppressed the sawei system between 1899 and 1914, when Japanese troops occupied Yap in September 1914, effectively ending the Yapese Empire as a functioning polity.
