Arawakan 'we people' of the cloud-forest valleys of the upper Perené, Palcazu and Pozuzo, keepers of a temple cult and of the priest-led pilgrimages to their sacred sites.

Franciscan missions at Cerro de la Sal rose and burned from 1635; expelled from Oxapampa for German colonists in 1891, the ~10,000 Yanesha clawed back communal land in the Palcazu and Villa Rica valleys.
