Nahua city-state on the southern freshwater lakes of the Valley of Mexico, renowned as the origin of the chinampa raised-field farming system that fed the Basin of Mexico; conquered by Tenochtitlan around 1430.

Conquered by Tenochtitlan c. 1430 and integrated into the Aztec Empire as a tributary province; fell to Cortés's forces in the 1521 siege, after which its ceremonial center was demolished and replaced by a Spanish colonial church.
