Xianbei

300 BC – 235
ConfederationAsia

Proto-Mongolic nomadic confederation that replaced the Xiongnu as the dominant power of the Mongolian Plateau, reaching its territorial peak under chieftain Tanshihuai (c. 156-181 CE) before fragmenting into successor states (Murong, Tuoba/Northern Wei, and others) that would rule northern China.

Rapidly disintegrated after Tanshihuai's death into rival tribal groups (Murong, Duan, Tuoba, Yuwen), several of which founded their own Sixteen-Kingdoms-era and Northern-Dynasties states.
