Lost effective independence when it signed a British protection treaty on 14 December 1884 at Oodweyne (reinforced by a second protectorate treaty in 1886), incorporating it into British Somaliland; Sultan Mohamoud Ali Shire was exiled to the Seychelles in 1920 after active opposition to British rule, ending meaningful Sultanic authority, though a nominal sultanate lineage has persisted culturally.
