Wanga Kingdom

1500 – 1894
KingdomAfrica

Luhya kingdom of western Kenya, the most centralized state in the region at colonization.

Political sovereignty was progressively dismantled by the British colonial administration from the 1890s onward; Nabongo Mumia was forced to retire from authority by the British in 1926 and his headquarters converted into a colonial post. The kingdom was never formally abolished but survives only as a ceremonial institution — the only kingdom in Kenya.
