A Bugis elective principality in the eastern South Sulawesi peninsula, distinctive for its comparatively consultative, oligarchic government. Founded in the 15th century, Wajoq reached its peak in the 18th century when it briefly replaced Bone as the leading power of South Sulawesi, its diaspora of Bugis traders spreading across the archipelago. It kept its independence until the Dutch subdued it in the early 20th century.
Subdued by the Dutch colonial government in 1906; retained a subordinate self-governing status thereafter.
