The third Bantustan declared independent by apartheid South Africa, established as a homeland for the Venda people in the far northern Transvaal near the Zimbabwean border; like the other homelands, its independence was recognised only by South Africa.
Reincorporated into South Africa on 27 April 1994; its territory is now part of Limpopo province.
