1828Independence of Uruguay The Treaty of Montevideo, signed 27 August 1828 under British mediation and ratified that October, created Uruguay as an independent buffer state between Argentina and Brazil.
1828Uruguay secedes after the Cisplatine War The 1825-1828 Cisplatine War against the United Provinces of the Rio de la Plata ended with the 1828 Preliminary Peace Convention (Treaty of Montevideo), in which Brazil's Cisplatina province became the independent Eastern Republic of Uruguay.
1831Massacre of Salsipuedes On 11 April 1831 President Fructuoso Rivera ambushes the assembled Charrúa at Salsipuedes Creek, killing the warriors and distributing some 300 survivors as servants, an act long mythologised as the end of Indigenous Uruguay though Charrúa descendants survive.
