Urartu

860 BC – 590 BC
KingdomAsia

An Iron Age kingdom centered on Lake Van that became the principal rival of Assyria in the 9th–7th centuries BC; its fortified cities and metalwork are the foundation of later Armenian cultural identity.

Destroyed c. 590 BCE when the Median Empire under Cyaxares conquered the Urartian capital Tushpa (Van); the kingdom had been severely weakened by Scythian and Cimmerian raids from c. 635 BCE onward, and its territory was subsequently incorporated into the Achaemenid Empire.
