The revolutionary successor to the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata, born of the 25 May 1810 Buenos Aires uprising against the Spanish viceroy and formally declared independent on 9 July 1816 by the Congress of Tucumán; it never fixed definitive borders and progressively lost Paraguay, Upper Peru and the Banda Oriental as distinct states.
Central authority collapsed after the Battle of Cepeda on 1 February 1820 dissolved the Directory; the provinces reorganized as the Argentine Confederation under the Federal Pact of 4 January 1831, the direct institutional ancestor of the modern Argentine Republic.
