Union of South Africa

1910 – 1961
Sovereign stateAfrica

Self-governing British dominion uniting the four southern colonies, precursor of apartheid South Africa.

The Union of South Africa became the Republic of South Africa on 31 May 1961 following a whites-only referendum held in October 1960; under pressure from African and Asian Commonwealth members over its apartheid policies, Prime Minister Verwoerd withdrew South Africa's application for continued Commonwealth membership, so the country simultaneously left the Commonwealth.
