Unangax̂ (Aleut)

5000 BC – present
Native nationNorth America

Master kayakers of the Aleutian chain, the first Alaska Natives the Russians reached, whose hunting skill the promyshlenniki seized to drive the sea-otter trade.

Contact with Bering's men in 1741 began a catastrophe: forced labor, the crushed 1763–64 revolt, and disease cut the Unangax̂ by ~90%. The WWII internment scattered them again, yet they persist in the Aleut Corporation region to 2026.
