Prosperous Late Bronze Age port city-state on the Syrian coast whose cuneiform archive preserved the earliest known alphabetic script.

Destroyed and permanently abandoned c. 1190–1185 BCE, most likely by the Sea Peoples during the Late Bronze Age collapse; tablets found at the site record desperate appeals for help, and the city was never reoccupied.
