Established in 284 CE by Xianbei nomads who subjugated local Qiang peoples in the Qilian Mountains and upper Yellow River valley, controlling a strategic Silk Road corridor between Tang China and Tibet at its height.

Conquered in 670 CE when a Tibetan Empire army decisively defeated Tang forces at the Battle of Dafeichuan, absorbing Tuyuhun territory into Tibetan control.
