The dominant Middle Bronze Age material culture across Central Europe, marked by burial under earthen tumuli (barrows) in place of the flat-grave cemeteries of its Únětice predecessor. Its heartland was the area previously occupied by the Únětice culture (already in this dataset), and its territory extended through Germany, the Czech lands, Austria, Switzerland, the Carpathian Basin, Poland, and eastern France.
Succeeded c. 1300 BC by the Late Bronze Age Urnfield culture (already in this dataset), as cremation and urn burial replaced tumulus inhumation across the same broad territory; contributed to the later formation of Italic and Celtic cultures.
Broad synthesis of Bronze Age Europe covering the Únětice–Tumulus–Urnfield sequence in Central Europe.
