Kingdom of Travancore

South Indian kingdom on the Malabar coast, consolidated by Marthanda Varma from c.1729, that dominated the far south of the subcontinent through the 18th-19th centuries and became a progressive, wealthy princely state under British paramountcy.

Merged into the Indian Union in 1949, joining with Cochin to form Travancore-Cochin state (the nucleus of modern Kerala).
