Tlingit

3000 BC – present
Native nationNorth America

Clan-based seafarers and traders of the Southeast Alaska panhandle, whose kwáans controlled the coast from Yakutat to Ketchikan and destroyed the Russian post at Sitka in 1802, holding it until the Russians returned in force in 1804.

After the 1804 Battle of Sitka and the 1867 purchase, the Tlingit founded the Alaska Native Brotherhood (1912) and won the land-claims fights that helped drive ANCSA; they govern through Sealaska and Tlingit & Haida to 2026.
