Gothic people of the plains north of the Lower Danube and west of the Dniester, first securely attested BY NAME in a Latin panegyric to Emperor Maximian delivered around 291 (possibly 292) — the earliest document to distinguish Gothic sub-groups by name. Associated with the Chernyakhov archaeological culture; ancestral to the Visigoths.

Crossed the Lower Danube into the Roman Empire in 376 under Hunnic pressure, becoming one of the founding groups of the Visigoths.
