Maratha principality of the Bhonsle dynasty in the Tamil country, founded when Venkoji (Ekoji), half-brother of Shivaji, seized Thanjavur; a noted centre of Marathi-Tamil court culture in the fertile Kaveri delta.
Became a British protectorate in 1783; from 1799 the territory (except the capital fort) was administered by the Madras Presidency, and the state lapsed to the British on the ruler's death in 1855.
