Established around 1725 when Tun Zainal Abidin, a younger brother of a former Johor sultan, was installed as Sultan Zainal Abidin I with Johor and Bugis backing. Terengganu grew as an east-coast trading and textile centre and sent the bunga mas to Siam until British suzerainty in 1909.
Non-terminal: Siamese tributary, British protectorate from 1909, and since 1957 a constituent monarchy of Malaysia.
Sets Terengganu's 1725 founding in the Johor succession and Bugis expansion context (Open Library /works/OL3901035W).
