Sole Spartan colony in Italy, founded 706 BCE by the Partheniae under Phalanthus; grew into one of the largest and most powerful cities of Magna Graecia, producing figures like the philosopher-statesman Archytas.

Called in King Pyrrhus of Epirus against Rome (the Pyrrhic War); surrendered to Rome in 272 BCE after Pyrrhus's withdrawal, ending its independence.
