The Tamoio were crushed in 1567 when Estácio de Sá's forces stormed the French and Tamoio strongholds and secured the new city of Rio de Janeiro; the victorious Temiminó were resettled across the bay at São Lourenço (Niterói) and were absorbed into the colonial city.
