Sunchituyoc culture (Cultura Sunchituyoc / Sunchituyoj)

700 – 900
CultureSouth America

Successor culture to Las Mercedes on the Chaco-Santiagueño plain (Santiago del Estero, Argentina), marked by earthen-mound villages ringed with palisades along the Dulce and Salado rivers, simple chiefdom-level political organization, and an economy of flood-recession farming, llama herding, and domesticated fowl.

Received iconographic influence from the Aguada culture and from the late Las Mercedes horizon; was in turn absorbed into and succeeded by the Averías culture from around 1200 AD in the same region.
