Malay Islamic sultanate on the Musi River in southern Sumatra, proclaimed by Sri Susuhunan Abdurrahman on the ruins of the earlier Palembang polity; controlled the pepper and tin trade of the river delta as a key VOC trading partner and rival.
Defeated by Dutch military expeditions in 1819 and 1821; the sultanate was formally abolished on 7 October 1823 and absorbed into the Dutch East Indies. Two rival ceremonial claimant lines persist today with no political authority.
