Abdali-dynasty sultanate in the fertile hinterland immediately north of Aden in southwest Yemen, which broke away from the Zaydi Qasimid imamate in the early 18th century and controlled Aden until the British seized the port in 1839.
Held Aden until the British bombarded and took it on 19 January 1839, thereafter a British-protected state within the Aden Protectorate (briefly Ottoman-occupied 1915-1918); the last Abdali sultan was expelled by the new communist regime in 1967 and Lahej joined South Yemen.
