Sultanate of Aussa

1734 – 1936
SultanateAfrica

Afar sultanate of the lower Awash, the leading polity of the Danakil desert.

Invaded and formally disestablished by Italy on 1 April 1936 during the Second Italo-Ethiopian War and incorporated into Italian East Africa; after Italian defeat in 1941 the Ethiopian government reasserted control and the sultanate continued only as a traditional leadership structure within Ethiopia's Afar Region — successive sultans are recognized but sovereignty has not been restored.
