The first major Tai Buddhist kingdom in mainland Southeast Asia, credited with developing the Thai script and establishing Theravada Buddhism as the state religion.

Annexed as a province of the Ayutthaya Kingdom in 1438 CE after the death of King Borommapan (Maha Thammaracha IV), completing a process of Ayutthayan suzerainty that had begun with Sukhothai's acknowledgement of Ayutthaya's supremacy in 1378.
