Suebi (Ariovistus-era confederation)

100 BC – 58 BC
ConfederationEurope

Large, militarily dominant confederation of Germanic tribes east of the Rhine under the chieftain Ariovistus, who crossed into Gaul at the Sequani's invitation and briefly dominated eastern Gaul before Julius Caesar defeated him in 58 BCE.

Ariovistus's confederation was broken at Caesar's victory near Vesontio (58 BCE), ending this specific migratory campaign; the broader Suebic ethnonym persisted for centuries afterward among many separate Germanic groups, culminating much later in the distinct 409 CE Suebi kingdom in Iberia already tracked in the dataset.
