The Nationalist faction of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939): the coalition of rebel army officers, monarchists, Carlists and the Falange that rose against the Second Spanish Republic in July 1936 and coalesced under General Francisco Franco. From their strongholds in Old Castile, León, Galicia, Navarre, Aragon and western Andalusia — backed by Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy — they took the northern coast in 1937, split the Republican zone in 1938 and captured Madrid in the spring of 1939, ending the war and founding Franco's dictatorship.
