Second Spanish Republic

Democratic republic proclaimed after Alfonso XIII's departure, enacting land reform, secularization, and regional autonomy statutes (Catalonia, Basque Country); polarization between left and right culminated in the military uprising of July 1936 and the Spanish Civil War, which the Republic lost in April 1939.

Defeated in the Spanish Civil War; Madrid fell to Nationalist forces on 28 March 1939 and Franco declared the war over on 1 April 1939, beginning Francoist Spain.
