Authoritarian one-party dictatorship under Generalísimo Francisco Franco following the Nationalist victory in the Civil War, formally styled the 'Spanish State' (Estado Español); neutral/non-belligerent in WWII, internationally isolated in the immediate postwar years, then rehabilitated via Cold War alignment with the US from 1953. Ended with Franco's death.

Ended with Franco's death on 20 November 1975; Juan Carlos I was proclaimed King two days later per Franco's own 1969 law of succession, beginning the transition to democracy.
