The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, a Communist single-party state successor to the Russian Empire and the world's first socialist superstate.

Formally dissolved on 26 December 1991 when the Supreme Soviet voted to dissolve the union the day after Gorbachev's resignation on 25 December, with Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and twelve other successor states having declared independence via the Belavezha Accords on 8 December and the Alma-Ata Protocol on 21 December.
