South Yemen (People's Democratic Republic of Yemen)

Marxist-Leninist state formed from the former Aden Colony/Protectorate upon British withdrawal on 30 November 1967 (initially the People's Republic of Southern Yemen, renamed the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen in 1970); the Arab world's only Communist-ruled state, aligned with the USSR.

United with the Yemen Arab Republic (North Yemen) on 22 May 1990 to form the unified Republic of Yemen.
