An early medieval Slavic tribal confederation in the Elbe-Saale/Lusatia region, first attested in Frankish chronicles from 631; sometimes identified with the 'White Serbs' tradition linked to the later Balkan Serbs, though Frankish sources treat them as a wholly separate political group and the ancestral link is historiographically contested. Most Sorbs remained in Lusatia, were gradually Germanized under Frankish/German rule, and survive today as the Sorbian minority of Germany.
Gradually absorbed into the Holy Roman Empire's eastern marches (10th century onward) and progressively Germanized; a Sorbian minority survives in Lusatia to the present day.
