City-stateAfrica

Saharan caravan city-state, the northern terminus of the trans-Saharan gold trade.

Sijilmasa, the great Saharan caravan entrepôt, declined with the shift to maritime trade routes from the 15th century onward; it was rebuilt under Sultan Moulay Ismail in the 18th century but was definitively destroyed by the nomadic Ait Atta tribe in 1818 and abandoned.
