Sicels (Siculi)

1200 BC – 440 BC
CultureEurope

Indo-European tribe of eastern Sicily, likely arriving from central Italy c. 1200-1000 BCE, distinct from the non-Indo-European Sicani to their west; gave Sicily its name.

Pushed inland by Greek coastal colonization; briefly united under the leader Ducetius against Greek expansion, but his defeat and death (440 BCE) led to rapid Hellenization and loss of distinct identity.
