Formally subordinated to Emperor Yohannes IV by the Treaty of Wadara on 20 March 1878; upon Yohannes's death at the Battle of Metemma, Menelik II was crowned Emperor on 3 November 1889 — the Kingdom of Shewa was thus subsumed into the Ethiopian Empire under its own former king.
