A khanate on the southern slope of the Greater Caucasus around Shaki (Nukha), the earliest of the Caucasus khanates to break free — founded by Hajji Chalabi during a revolt against Nader Shah c.1743; a Russian protectorate from 1805, abolished in 1819.
Became a Russian protectorate in 1805 and was formally abolished by the Russian Empire in 1819 when its last khan died and it was converted into a province; the cession from Iran had been confirmed by Gulistan (1813).
