An Indianised, Mahayana Buddhist dynasty that rose in 8th-century central Java, dominating the Mataram realm and, for a period, the Srivijaya thalassocracy in Sumatra; renowned as the builders of Borobudur.
Lost its grip on Java to the rival Sanjaya line by the mid-9th century -- king Balaputradewa was driven out c. 850s -- but the Shailendra family continued to rule Srivijaya in Sumatra afterward.
