A Sunni Muslim dynasty of Kurdish origin that ruled parts of Armenia and Arran (the southern Caucasus) from 951, seated first at Dvin and later at Ganja, and intermarried repeatedly with the Christian Bagratuni royal family of Armenia; a cadet branch was granted Ani and Tbilisi under Seljuk overlordship.
Progressively absorbed by Seljuk and then Georgian expansion in the Caucasus over the 12th century; the last Shaddadid holdings (around Ani) fell by 1199.
