Sesklo Culture

6850 BC – 5000 BC
CultureEurope

Earliest fully agricultural Neolithic culture of mainland Greece, centered on Thessaly, with its type site at Sesklo near Volos, reaching a peak settlement of roughly 5,000 people.

Traditionally said to have been violently succeeded by the Dimini culture around 5000 BC ('invasion theory'); a competing thermoluminescence-dating study argues Sesklo persisted to c. 4400 BC and coexisted with Dimini for a time rather than being conquered outright.
