Founded in 1766 when the Bugis prince Raja Lumu (of the Luwu-descended Opu line) was installed as Sultan Salehuddin Shah at Kuala Selangor. Selangor's wealth lay in the tin of the Klang and Langat valleys; civil wars over the tin trade drew in the British, who imposed a Resident in 1874.
Non-terminal: British Resident from 1874, Federated Malay State, and since 1957 a constituent monarchy of Malaysia.
