The largest Interior Salish nation, whose seventeen bands ranged the Thompson and Fraser grasslands from pit-house winter villages.

The 1862 smallpox epidemic and gold-rush flood reshaped their world; the Secwépemc formed the Shuswap Nation Tribal Council (1980) and assert title across Secwepemcúl'ecw to this day.
