The restored Bulgarian state founded by the Asen dynasty in 1185 after a revolt against Byzantium, reaching its zenith under Ivan Asen II before falling to the Ottoman Empire in 1396.

Fell to the Ottoman Empire in 1396 after the Bulgarian capital Tarnovo fell in 1393 and the last Bulgarian ruler, Tsar Ivan Sratsimir of Vidin, was captured by Sultan Bayezid I in 1396.
