Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach

Senior Ernestine Wettin duchy in Thuringia and the largest of the Thuringian states; raised to a grand duchy at the Congress of Vienna, it was the Weimar of Goethe, Schiller and Herder and the first German state to receive a liberal constitution (1816).

Proclaimed a republic in November 1918 in the German Revolution; the Free State of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach was merged into the new State of Thuringia in 1920, with Weimar as its capital.
