Sawantwadi State

The Sawant Bhonsle sar-desais' state in the southern Konkan, wedged between the Western Ghats and Portuguese Goa; founded when Khem Savant threw off Bijapuri overlordship, it survived as a Maratha tributary and then a British-protected state until 1948.

Acceded to India in 1947 and merged into Bombay State on 8 March 1948 (Maharashtra from 1960).
